Tattoo Education:

Tattooing and artistry go hand in hand. When we talk about art in tattooing we usually refer to illustrative art. Generally, a person who is better at illustrative art will be a more well rounded a tattooist. However, being a good artist almost never exclusively means you are a good tattooist. Tattooing is a learned skill separate from the talent of art. Tattooing involves knowing how to move a vibrating needle covered in ink across the skin such that the ink is laid in the skin artfully and stays in the skin properly. It can take an artist years to sufficiently learn this skill. A good tattooist will also understand the mechanics of tattoo machines and have a broad base of knowledge about inks and skin. Each artist develops their own style and area of expertise. Make sure you find an artist that is right for you.

1) When searching for a place to do your tattoo ask questions.

  • How long have they been in business?
  • Do they have a good reputation?
  • Is the shop clean and organized?
  • How much experience does your tattooist have?
  • Are the needles single use and pre-sterilized?
  • Are the tattoo tubes bagged and sterilized?

2) Shop with your eyes, not your wallet.

Portfolios are, by far, the best way to determine a tattooists skill and style. Always look through portfolios to get an understanding of the artists work. Some artists are better than others, and generally, charge accordingly. Tattooing is not fast food work and you should find an artist that suits your needs. Remember, you often get what you pay for.

 3) Tattooing is permanent.

Get something that you know you could live with for the rest of your life. Be careful what words, people, or symbols you choose to get tattooed. Your tastes may change over the years. Even with expensive painful surgery your tattoo would never be completely erased and will always leave a marked area. You don’t have to choose from something directly off the wall. While never inappropriate to get good flash on your body, a good artist can modify something or do a complete unique custom piece you may be immeasurably happier over time. You will pay a little more, but be far more impressed.

4) Make sure the shop has an up to date license.

5) Give the artist some artistic license.

A good artist knows what looks good. Sometimes, it is a proper to let the artist suggest a modification.

6) Talk to your tattooist.

Make sure you feel comfortable with them. You may be spending a lot of hours with them.

7) Having some medical background such as RN, EMT, etc., does not qualify you to pierce or tattoo.

While a medical background has some overlap and support, it does not distinguish one tattooist over another. Tattooists are first and foremost, artists and, as such, the specific knowledge required to perform a tattoo really has nothing to do with a medical background.

8) When you come in for your tattoo be sober, well slept, well fed, and healthy.

Poor constitutions can lead to a bad experience. Sit still, and do not move. The less you move the easier it is to tattoo you and the less time it will take.
